The word ‘Hoyo’ literally means ‘hole’ and in the case of the great Cuban cigar brand, Hoyo de Monterrey Cigars, it relates to the low lying tobacco plantation found on the river bank of the town of San Juan y Martínez - the place where ‘Hoyo’ had its origins.

It was Jose Gener, originally a late 19th Century tobacco leaf farmer, who brought the great brand of Hoyo de Monterrey to life in the 1960’s. In the mid 1970’s the ‘Le Hoyo’ series of cigars was launched to market, in response to growing demand for a richer tasting line of Cuban cigars. This name is said to translate to ‘The Valley of Monterrey’ a now very famous area that lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo tobacco growing region of South West Cuba, and a place where locals believe that ‘Gold’ really grows from its land.

Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are well known amongst lovers of the leaf, for its recognizable red and gold band, but more so for their perfect construction, even burns, distinct flavours and silky finish.

Most connoisseurs have indulged with a Hoyo ‘Epicure’ at some point. The word epicure means, ‘a person who takes particular pleasure in fine food and drink’.  That’s completely fitting for a Hoyo. Whether it’s the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.1, Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial or one of the greatest cuban sticks ever produced, the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2 you can count on it being created from only the very finest Cuban tobacco.
