The Cigar Ashtray: The Most Underrated Tool in Your Setup

I learned the value of a proper cigar ashtray the hard way.

Years ago, I was sitting outside with a few mates, enjoying what should’ve been a cracking cigar. Good stick. Good night. Decent whisky on the table.

Problem was… there was nowhere to rest the cigar.

So like an amateur, I balanced it on the edge of a beer glass.

You already know what happened!! 🙄

Halfway through a story the cigar rolled, hit the table, ash everywhere, wrapper cracked, and the whole moment went sideways. One of the boys just shook his head and said, “Mate… you run a cigar business, and you don’t own a proper ashtray?”

Fair call.

Since then I’ve become a bit particular about the humble cigar ashtray, because once you start paying attention, you realise it’s not just about somewhere to dump ash. It’s part of the whole rhythm of smoking a cigar.

And when you’ve got the right one, the whole experience feels smoother.

Why a Cigar Ashtray Is Different to a Regular Ashtray

Cigars aren’t cigarettes.

Different size.
Different burn.
Different pace.

Which means a standard ashtray, the little shallow things made for darts, just doesn’t cut it.

A proper cigar ashtray is designed with a few important details:

- Wide rests so the cigar sits properly without damaging the wrapper
- Deep bowls that hold long cigar ash
- Solid weight so it doesn’t slide around the table

If you’ve ever smoked a well-rolled cigar, you’ll know the ash can hold on for ages. That long grey stack is actually a sign the cigar is burning nicely.

But when it finally drops, you want somewhere proper for it to land.

Not your lap.

The Ash Is Part of the Ritual

One thing you learn after smoking cigars for a while is that the ash tells a story.

A well-made cigar builds ash slowly. It stays firm, almost sculptural, until the moment you gently roll it off.

Notice I said roll, not flick.

Cigars don’t like being flicked like cigarettes. It messes with the burn.

Instead, you give it a gentle tap on the edge of the cigar ashtray and let gravity do the work.

It’s a slower rhythm.

And that rhythm is part of what makes cigars enjoyable in the first place.

Why Outdoor Smoking Changes Everything

Let’s be honest, plenty of cigars in Australia get smoked outside.

Back deck.
Balcony.
A mate’s backyard on a Friday night.

That’s where ashtray design starts to matter even more.

Wind, uneven tables, and longer smoking sessions mean lightweight ashtrays become a pain pretty quickly.

Even the editors at Cigar Aficionado talk about this. In their article Outdoor Ashtrays, they explain that cigar smokers need heavier, stable designs that can handle outdoor conditions without tipping or sliding around.

They’re spot on.

A proper cigar ashtray should feel solid enough that when you put it down, it stays put.

Materials That Actually Work

There are plenty of flashy ashtrays out there, but the good ones tend to come down to a few reliable materials.

Ceramic and porcelain are classics. They’re easy to clean, heavy enough to stay stable, and look great on a table.

Metal ashtrays are popular for outdoor smoking because they’re tough and don’t care about weather.

Then there are the more modern pieces; stone, glass, mixed material,  which start looking more like lounge decor than just a cigar accessory.

And honestly, that’s part of the fun.

A good cigar ashtray doesn’t just hold ash. It becomes part of the setup.

When the Accessories Start Working Together

Something funny happens once you start building a proper cigar setup.

One accessory leads to another.

First, it’s a decent ashtray.

Then you realise your lighter isn’t doing the cigar justice, so you upgrade to a proper cigar lighter that gives an even toast on the foot.

Then you start paying attention to cutters, and that’s where brands like Les Fines Lames come in with those elegant knife-style cutters that slice a cap beautifully clean.

None of these tools are strictly necessary.

But once you’ve used them, it’s hard to go back.

The Right Ashtray for the Right Moment

Some ashtrays are built for solo smokes.

Others are clearly made for a group of mates - four cigar rests, deep bowl, big enough that everyone has space.

That’s something worth thinking about when choosing a cigar ashtray.

If you’re mostly smoking alone on the balcony, a smaller piece works perfectly.

But if your place tends to become the unofficial cigar lounge on weekends, you’ll want something larger.

Something sturdy.

Something that doesn’t fill up after the first cigar.

There’s a range of designs depending on whether you want something classic, modern, or built for group smoking sessions.

Why the Little Details Matter

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the cigar experience is made up of small details.

The cut.
The light.
The draw.

The ashtray is one of those quiet details that people overlook… until they have a good one.

Then suddenly the whole setup feels right.

You’ve got somewhere solid to rest the cigar, somewhere clean for the ash, and the smoke flows without interruption.

It sounds simple.

But when you’re sitting there with a good cigar and good company, simple is exactly what you want.

Final Thoughts on Cigar Ashtrays

Cigars aren’t about rushing.

They’re about slowing down for a bit.

And the tools around the cigar should make that easier, not harder.

A proper cigar ashtray might not be the flashiest accessory in your kit, but once you’ve got a good one on the table, you’ll wonder how you ever smoked without it.

Trust me,  your cigars (and your coffee table) will thank you.
